Action of Ultraviolet Light on Spores and Vegetative Forms of B. Megatherium Sp

چکیده

Spores and vegetative forms of a strain of B. megatherium were irradiated by ultraviolet light of the wave lengths 2536 A, 2803 A, and 3132 A. The killing rate of both bacteria and spores is exponential, in agreement with irradiation results on other bacteria. Twice as much incident energy is needed to kill the spores as the vegetative forms (50 per cent death). The absorbed energy per bacterium for 50 per cent killing has been calculated on the assumption that the absorption of the vegetative cells is the same as that of colon bacilli. These results are compared with previous measurements on other bacteria.

Hexosamine-containing peptides in spores of Bacillus subtilis, B. megatherium and B. cereus.

In a previous paper (Powell & Strange, 1953) the isolation of non-dialysable peptides containing hexosamine from exudates produced by germinating spores ofBacillus 8ubtilis and B. megatherium was described. More precise chemical definition can now be given to these peptides. In the following report, a comparison is made between their constitution and that ofthe peptides present in extracts from...

Some Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation on Sporulating Cultures of Bacillus Cereus'

Zelle and Hollaender (1955) summarized data from several sources which showed that spores of aerobic bacilli are usually about twice as resistant to killing by ultraviolet light as are vegetative cells of the same species. Recently Stuy (1956) showed that spores of Bacillus cereus are many times more resistant than their vegetative cells. In seeking an explanation for the discrepancies in these...

Sterilization effect of UV light on Bacillus spores using TiO(2) films depends on wavelength.

UV light and photocatalysts such as titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) and silver (Ag) are useful for disinfection of water and surfaces. However, the effect of UV wavelength on photocatalytic disinfection of spores is not well understood. Inactivation of Bacillus spores has been examined using different UV wavelengths and TiO(2) or TiO(2)/Ag composite materials. The level of UVA disinfection of Bacillu...

Effect of Light Combination and Timing of Supplemental Lighting on Vegetative Traits and Flowering Time of Petunia (Petunia × hybrida)

The aim of this study was to examine how timing of supplemental lighting and different light combinations affect the vegetative and reproductive responses of petunia (Petunia × hybrida Super cascade Blue). This experiment was designed as a factorial based on a randomized complete blocks design with three replications. After being in the greenhouse for 12 hours, the plants received supplemental ...
